KHS Honored For Three Past Verdicts and Settlement

KHS is proud to announce the inclusion of three cases in Top Verdict’s 2016 and 2017 Lists for Personal Injury and Labor & Employment cases.

Top Verdict searches the nation’s best verdicts, awards, and settlements for recognition on their prestigious and limited lists.  Inclusion on one of Top Verdict’s lists is not based on peer or panel review, but rather is based on the facts of the case and the outcome achieved.

Triplett v. City of Los Angeles, et al. (2016) was a slip and fall case that occurred at the Los Angeles International Airport. Based on Defendant’s failure to install slip-resistant tile in the restroom, Ms. Triplett suffered severe and permanent back injuries after slipping on liquid on the floor.  The jury awarded $2,160,000 to our client and found no comparative fault.  This verdict was listed as the #32 of the Top 50 Personal Injury Verdicts in California for 2016.

Abarca v. Citizens of Humanity, et al. (2017) was a joint effort with co-counsel Michael Burgis & Associates. When our client, Mr. Abarca, was injured at work, he sought modified duty and provided a doctor’s note to his employer, Citizens of Humanity.  Citizens ultimately terminated Mr. Abarca only days after his doctor’s note expired.  In trial, the jury found Citizens had wrongfully terminated Mr. Abarca, and had discriminated against him on the basis of disability, awarding Mr. Abarca $650,000 including punitive damages for Citizens’ malice, oppression, and fraud in terminating Mr. Abarca.  This verdict was listed as #26 of the Top 50 Labor and Employment Verdicts in California in 2017.

Theis v. Mayboroda et al. (2017) involved a rear end car crash that occurred in January 2015 in Pacific Palisades, California.  At the time of the crash, the defendant driver was leaving work but was heading to a customer’s home to drop off items she had forgotten at the store.  As a result of being hit, Mr. Theis suffered neck and back injuries requiring multiple surgeries.  With multiple motions pending, and the trial date close, KHS was able to secure a settlement against both the defendant driver and his employer totaling $1,799,999.99.  This settlement made it onto the Top 50 Personal Injury Settlements of 2017 at #24.
